Twitter buys Tweetdeck for $40 million - $50 million ?

Tweetdeck has long been the subject of rumors regarding a buyout of some sort. First there was mention of Ubermedia buying the company, and more recently there was talk of Twitter itself trying to buy the developer. Today we’re hearing that it’s confirmed: Twitter has bought Tweetdeck.

According to TechCrunch’s sources Twitter decided to make the $40 million - $50 million offer to Tweetdeck simply to combat Ubermedia. Ubermedia has acquired a large number of Twitter and social mediaclients as of late, which apparently put Twitter on the defensive. Rather than letting one of the most popular apps fall into Ubermedia’s hands, Twitter decided to buy it for itself.
There’s no official announcement just yet, but it sounds like a done deal. It’ll be interesting to see how Tweetdeck integrates with Twitter, if at all. The one thing we can probably expect is promoted trends in future versions of Tweetdeck. Hopefully the Facebook integration will remain as it is, and continue to improve along with the rest of the Tweetdeck client from now on.
