Steve Jobs’s Twitter-Friendly Headlines?

Apple is known for its secrecy so it’s nearly impossible to know everything that CEO Steve Jobs will unveil in his presentations.  But one thing he is guaranteed to do—position the product or service in one sentence that easily fits in a Twitter post of 140 characters.
This technique is one of the most valuable communication tips you can learn from Apple and it’s fairly easy to implement.
On Monday, June 6, Steve Jobs took to the stage to kick off Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.  Jobs used the platform to introduce a service called iCloud. Jobs described iCloud in one sentence: iCloud stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices.  The description consists of 73 characters.  If Steve Jobs had a Twitter account he could post the headline and still be left with 67 characters.  It’s also important to note that Steve Jobs created one slide that contained the headline and nothing else.Steve Jobs presents icloud  He does this in every presentation – the headline gets its own slide.
You might also notice that Apple makes its product headline consistent across all of its marketing and advertising channels.  As soon as the presentation ended Monday morning—and not a minute later—the Apple Web site changed to reflect the new initiative. Apple site announcing icloud The site displayed an image of the iCloud icon along with the Twitter friendly headline.  The Apple press release also repeated the headline in its first sentence.  The press release read, “The iCloud stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices.”  Very few companies launch a new product with messages that are this refined and consistent.
If you can’t describe your company, product, service or initiative in 140 characters or less, go back to the drawing board.  Your audience demands clarity and simplicity.  Give it to them in ashort sentence.
